John Ross

Chief Financial Officer

For the past twenty years John Ross has called Boston home. Originally from London, England, John relocated to the United States to enhance his Chartered Accountant ("CPA") training through exposure to American business. He found his chosen career in banking, initially as Director of Long Range Financial Planning with State Street Bank & Trust Company and subsequently 20 years with Bank of Boston. At that bank his responsibilities ranged from Deputy General Manager and CFO in the U.K. to First Vice President in the Boston headquarters responsible for Corporate MIS, Internal Control, Management Reporting and other senior positions.

Since 1997 John has been United Way of Massachusetts Bay's (UWMB) Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President, Finance & Administration. With two titles comes significant responsibility, and, in John's case, includes oversight of all of the finance, human resource, technology and administration functions of the organization.

Although at various times conversant in several languages - Latin, French, and Italian - it is his adoptive "American" tongue that serves him best as a leader of UWMB. His dry wit and astute manner help John navigate the complexities of meeting the needs of various constituents while faced with finite resources. This inherent challenge of non-profit stewardship is enormously rewarding for John who feels privileged to serve in the health and services field.

John is no stranger to the philanthropic world. He has served as chairman, then treasurer (and now trustee) of the Arthritis Foundation's Massachusetts chapter. John was also at one time treasurer and trustee of the New England College of Finance. Immediately prior to coming to UWMB, John was director of Finance for ABCD, Inc., the largest human service agency in New England.

A voracious reader, a lover of wine and single malt and a keen tennis player, John finds most satisfaction in a good round of golf.
