Kevin StoneSenior Vice President, Workplace Giving
There is no questioning Kevin Stone's loyalty or dedication to United Way of Massachusetts Bay (UWMB). Since 1968, Kevin has served the organization, steadily rising through the ranks after he was hired for a temporary position in the development office 35 years ago. Remarkably, Kevin has helped to raise over one billion dollars for the Mass Bay community during his tenure at UWMB. While his heart is in fund raising, fund raising is in his blood; Kevin's mother was a leadership gifts chairwoman in Cambridge during Kevin's young adulthood, and is the person responsible for pointing him in the direction of United Way. Once he got the job, Kevin discovered that he thrived on the challenges and opportunities fund raising granted him, and that he felt passionate about supporting initiatives that helped people in the Mass Bay area. While Kevin acknowledges that the current climate of corporate mergers and acquisitions has decreased the pool of Boston-based companies capable of giving large gifts, he firmly believes that the potential to reach more individuals is still there and that more creative approaches are needed to maintain levels of giving. When asked to name any mentors or specific people who have influenced his career along the way, Kevin acknowledges the efforts of the many CEOs he has met who have "stepped up to the plate" in their charitable giving. In particular, Kevin admires former UWMB's chief executive officer, Marian L. Heard, for her dedication toward making a difference in the lives of individuals and their families. In Kevin's opinion, Marian is an example of someone who "walks the talk" and leads and motivates others by her examples. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving between 1964 and 1968, including time in Vietnam, Kevin is a lifelong resident of the Boston-area. He currently lives in Somerville, Massachusetts with his wife. They have two grown sons.
