increasing youth initiativesupdatesOut of Harm's Way (continued)An OHW manager has been hired at each school to identify students’ needs, improve communication and coordination among existing in-school and out-of-school time staff and activities, and identify additional community resources to meet identified student needs. Teaching staff (including both public school teaching staff and afterschool staff) have benefited from a series of training modules developed and implemented by the Program for Education, Afterschool and Resiliency (PEAR) and the Children's Trauma Recovery Foundation. The focus of the training is to increase adults' understanding of the effects of trauma on youth's healthy development and learning and to assist teachers in developing effective strategies to help students manage their behavior in positive ways and to respond to their social and emotional needs. The trainings have also assisted principals and staff at both schools to develop School Wellness Teams to help engender and support positive school climate. |
