"An entire street of boarded up, foreclosed houses."

video footage of Hendry Street in Dorchester

Carl Stevens of WBZnews radio reports with footage from Meeting House
Hill in Dorchester. It's worth it to see. It is one thing to read about all of the causes and repercussions of
foreclosures, but it's quite another to see the visual effect of how
the crisis is playing out in some neighborhoods, where tripledecker
homes, one after another after another, have been boarded up. Take a
look, let me know what you think.

You may also want to read the
editorial in today's Globe which points to a "virus of foreclosures" in the same neighborhood. (Thanks to Chris for pointing the editorial out for me via a comment on an earlier post. Click here, scroll down for his comment).

Here's my question: The Globe's choice of words to describe the changes in this neighborhood is important. This neighborhood is by all appearances ailing, some might even say dying. How does this visual affect the youth in that neighborhood? How do we involve them in the discussion and in the effort to build the solutions? So that it doesn't seem hopeless. So that they can envision the neighborhood vibrant again. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks to Universal Hub for the initial post.

This video reminds me of

This video reminds me of powerful documentary I watched in one of my social work classes called "Holding Ground: The Rebirth of Dudley Street". The documentary tells the story of Roxbury residents in partnership with the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) who through the creative use of eminent domain were able to reclaim and redevelop their own community which had become filled with abandoned homes and vacant lots. This is an such a strong example of how community members can not only be "involved in the conversation", but LEAD the conversation about reclaiming their neighborhood. I couldn't find it on the internet but you can get it from the Boston Public Library and the Minuteman Library Network. Watch and be inspired...
