increasing youth opportunities

Overview

We're building a connection between schools, out-of-school programs and parents through public/private partnerships that aim to address the root causes of youth issues and enable youth to graduate from high school with options for the future.

Current Efforts

Connecting Schools and After-Schools -- This strategy brings together two of a child's most influential resources beyond their parents-their schoolteachers and their after-school program staff.

Engaging Families Initiative (EFI)/Focus on Families! -- The goal of EFI is to improve learning outcomes for Black and Latino children ages 6-10 by assisting families in their efforts to support their children's development, informal learning and academic achievement during out-of-school time.

Faith-Based Initiative -- UWMB's Faith-Based Initiaitve mobilizes communities of faith and other stakeholders to effectively reach high-risk youth who face multiple barriers to successful outcomes in life.

Latino After-school Initiative (LASI) - Focused on children ages 7-14, LASI's aim has been to help reduce the achievement gap experienced by youth in Greater Boston by focusing on academic skills and character.

Lynn Pilot - As part of a two-year pilot project, UWMB works with three Lynn agencies that run after-school programs to introduce best practices for relationship-building among staff and youth.

MARS - Pathways to Success for Youth: What Counts in After-school, A Report of Massachusetts After-school Research Study - This groundbreaking research is the first of its kind to explore the relationship and connections between staff attributes and program quality features with academic and social outcomes for youth.

MSTi - The Math, Science, Technology Initiative is a groundbreaking collaboration between UWMB and the healthcare/life sciences industries and community partners.

Out of Harm's Way -- This multi-year initiative focuses on reducing violence in targeted middle schools in Boston by ensuring youth most in need of support and services receive them.

Today's Girls . Tomorrow's Leaders (TGTL) We partner with the community to address the unique issues and challenges facing girls and young women.

Turn It Up and Get Active - UWMB's campaign to fight childhood obesity.
